LEX 18 officials shocked by Emmy Awards’ plane-crash spoof intro
LEX 18 News ended an evening recap of yesterday’s coverage of the Comair Flight 5191 crash for the live broadcast of the prime-time Emmy Awards. The annual TV awards show opened with shots of host Conan O’Brien bouncing inside a plane before it crashed on an island in a spoof of ABC’s hit show Lost.
WLEX’s president and general manager, Tim Gilbert, who was home watching the telecast with his family, was “stunned” by the intro; if station managers had known about the intro before the broadcast, Lexington viewers wouldn’t have seen it, he said.
“It was a live telecast — we were completely helpless,” Gilbert said of the Emmys. “By the time we began to react, it was over. At the station, we were as horrified as they were at home.”
Gilbert said he’ll complain to NBC, but he said an apology won’t make up for insensitivity.
“They could have killed the opening and it wouldn’t have hurt the show at all,” Gilbert said. “We wish somebody had thought this through. It’s somewhere between ignorance and incompetence.”

Everything can’t be a problem, I don’t really see the issue here…
jesus, does america have to be so uptight about EVERYTHING?
What is it with you conservative bloggers these days? Honest to God, it’s getting so that I can barely see a difference on my whineometer anymore.
The American Public should boycott the Emmy’s. The loss of life on the airplane was terrible. I will never watch the Emmy’s again because of the “I could care less - It’s a joke when a plane crashes” attitude that was aired. A plane crash is always awful; but to JOKE about it on the day of a crash is inexcuseable! Shame of this network for not being more intouch with our Nation. How much more ‘GREADY AND SELF SERVING’ can a station get!
I live in Kentucky, and a lot of people here are uptight about the plane crash. I find this spoof to be VERY insensitive.
Look folks, I’m definitely on the conservative side, but here’s the thing.
It wasn’t done with malicious intent, there wasn’t a concerted effort to make the show disrespectful.
Should NBC have taken it out, definitely, but do you really think that they would?
Besides, I am a little bit uncomfortable listening to people griping about class when the website has links to porn actresses and lesbian kissing scenes.
Its not a matter of being insensitive. Its a matter of being stupid and inhumane. These hollyweird characters need to come off their pedastals and find that there is real life behind their own phony la-la land of the “I” syndrome. Life is real. These movies and so called talented actors and actresses are nothing more than whores to themselves. Completely at a loss to what and who real people are. Reality of life or the drug induced state of hollyweird. There is no connection. Real people hurt and do not fake the emotions of loss.
somewhere, somehow, sometime, there is always a disaster. So, the new rule is no humor about . . . disasters, car accidents, race, religion, appearance, short people, tall people, dumb people, animals, vegetables, minerals, politics, creed, current events, clothing styles, life styles, sex, men, women AND UNDECIDEDS. In fact, no humor at all
As a native Kentuckian, I firmly believe that if the crash had happened in California - especially out of LAX or SJC of SF, this would never have been shown.
It just confirms my belief that celebs don’t give a sh*t about ‘flyover country’.
It was a spoof of a TV show. Geesus. It wasn’t insensitive. Insensitive means actually doing it with forthought and knowledge. Insensitive is actually making fun of THAT crash. This was a spoof of Lost, and just bad luck on the timing. Oh well. Grow up and realize that the world doesn’t stop just because you have a tragedy in your little corner of it.
Everyone needs to calm down and stop worrying about this stuff. We need to be less uptight about what is on TV (since it is covered by free speech anyway - FCC is NOT meant to police the airwaves) and more uptight about Bush’s foreign policy and his uncanny ability to make national enemies out of friends and beneficiaries
hey nit wit, #3 Bingo, the public has a right to complain about this. This just proves that HOLLYWOOD IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE REST OF AMERICA.
and conservatives are often referred to as “the silent majority”. Liberals are the ones who do most of the whining. I mean, whose more likely to stage loudmouth public protests …or set up Camp Casey? whineometer my ass!
Bingo:
Do you have a family? If your mother (if you ever had one) or your child had been on that plane would you have found it “ok”?
N.B.C. stands for No Body Cares !
How insensitive can you be ?
Conan O’Brian is a Never Was Wanabee No Talent !
So much for poor entertainment.
Is it any wonder that Hollywood & the Liberal Left has little or no respect for human life? They look at the War on Terror the same way that they look at horrible air disasters & threatening dictators, by turning a blind eye. To them all tragic events that occur in the world are nothing more than additional material for their late night comedy routines.
While people die around the world Hollywood will still go on telling the same old tasteless jokes & spinning remakes of old classics to a vastly diminishing audience.
From the moment the video began we knew where it was heading and why. My wife and I were appalled at NBC’s using this video in light of the disaster that occurred early in the morning. Don’t let anyone tell you that it could not have been stopped and let Conan O’Braindead ad lib it for a few moments.
Typical Hollywood/Show Biz stuff again. When will the public wake up and realize that only our boycotting their products and perfomances will make them wake up. (Maybe, unless they [the Hollywood elite] have all gone wacko)
I don’t see a problem with this skit at all. Like other posters have said bad things happen every day to people. Is CSI supposed to stop running shows because they are doing a show about some girl who was raped and 10 women across the US are raped every day (its probally more than that). Personally if my family was on that plane, I could care less about what NBC was showing. It is not insensitive. Life goes on. We mourn the ones we love and contiue to live.
This is about the liberal agenda having no commonsense to identify a very tramatic event that occured, only hours before, and not having the courtesy to use good judgement to rethink their introduction to the show. It’s about thinking about others and not just their elitest asses. Unfortunately, it would be safe to say that if one of those ’stars’ were to have been involved in a similar accident hours before, I doubt they would have decided to air that presentation as it was presented last night.

Why should anything that those people in Hollywood do surprise the rest of the nation. Frankly, I stopped watching network TV years ago and haven’t seen a movie in almost as long and don’t miss any of it. The sooner this nation quits letting Hollywood influence our daily lives, the better off we will all be!
I don’t see a problem here. I think it was just bad timing and people should just chill the fuc/
Emmys? I didn’t realize they still televise that!
You know, it *may* have been insensitive not to alter this opening, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t funny.
To everyone who was complaining - If you were SO upset about the Kentucky plane crash tragedy, WHY were you watching the Emmy’s?!?!?!
And why, oh WHY, does EVERYTHING now-a-days have to be “left vs right”, “conservative vs liberal”, “Bush dittoheads vs everyone else”?!?!?!?!?
LIGHTEN UP people and worry about something that actually MATTERS in your life.
Geez. The thing was funny. This country has just turned into a bunch of whiny, uptight people just LOOKING for something else to whine about. Get over yourselves, people!!!!
I wasn’t personally affected by the crash but I was disappointed but not surprised that they didn’t edit it out. I stand by my comment that if the crash had happened in California or NYC, they would have edited it out.
It happened in KY so who the h*ll cares.
I really am not furious. I’m to the point, that I don’t give a damn what Hollywood does or says about anything anymore. Just disappointed, that’s all.
I agree with Tom. These people are all copies of each other. Unshaved men who can’t act; long blond hair, skeleton women who can’t act. Shame, shame. We all used to love real actors. The are so self involved, they don’t really notice the rest of the world, except to follow the leader in politicl opinion, and take up causes they know nothing about.
It’s sickening to think we’re so anal that we expect every one to react and/or modify their lives and careers real time. It’s sad the crash happened, many bad things happen daily, and everyone needs to buck up and stop expecting everyone to bend over if something happens in their lives.
As others said, it was a spoof of something else… so get off the uptight horse and get some help if you can’t deal with it… the rest of us appreciated it for what it was, and also feel for your loss. It’s not the first, won’t be the last tragedy since we’re putting out mindless tv while everyone tries to kill each other. Love it while youre here, soon your whiny ass will be gone too… don’t waste it protesting and proliferating uptightness, some of us are trying to enjoy life and aren’t offended by the occasional body part being shown on tv., etc.
I GUARANTEE THAT EVERYONE THAT HAS USED THE TERM “WE NEED TO CHILL OUT OVER THIS SPOOF” ARE LEFT WINGERS. IF IT HAD BEEN A PLANE LOAD OF GAY ACTIVISTS KILLED, THE SPOOF WOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELLED IN RESPECT TO THE DECEASED AND THEIR FAMILIES
